Kfar Kassem Secondary School

The new secondary school of Kfar Kassem located in the southern part of the Kfar Kassem Town. The site topographical condition of the site arose challenge and opportunity to the design. The slope in the land is sharp creating difference in heights{, between the eastern and the western side of the land, about twenty meters. Taking in consideration the classrooms requirement for the northern and southern light coupled with the site limitations resulted in distributing the functions along the east west axis along the slope direction. This orientation created the opportunity to allow direct connection of the buildings’ interior with the exterior surroundings.  All the buildings floor became ‘ground floors’ that extend to the outside nature. In addition, the roofs turn into upper courtyard that define the access from east – the highest level of the site.  This organization of the complex transformed all the site area to act as an open public space with a large variety of settings including courtyards, open air auditoriums, bridges, roofs and balcony. This organisation required a circulation system that integrate all the interior space within themselves and with the exterior open and semi-open space. This system acts as weaving element of all the spatial components. The building corridors which are integral part of the circulation system   function as a transition in-between places from the “purely” outside open space to the inside closed space.  The overall complex configuration make it possible to allow the flow of the prevailing wind from the west and increases the shaded area needed for outside activities.
