Candelaria Waterfront

The project is a wind resilient canopy designed for Candelaria Waterfront. Candelaria is located 20km South of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The lively avenue, full of restaurants and shops, is a popular spot among locals and tourists. It enjoys views to the Atlantic Ocean as well as the seasonal winds in Canary Island that predominantly come from the North East.

The word Inventarte encapsulates three meanings: innovation, wind and art. This concept emphasizes the importance of art in the design of public space allowing people to build a sense of place and intimacy with the surrounding ecosystem. The project draws inspiration from the longstanding career of the international artist Cesar Manrique by celebrating the presence of the wind in shaping Canary Island identity and sense of place.

Steel, textile, wind and sun constitute altogether the material system of the canopy. The triangulated steel structure organizes the rhythm of the spaces allowing the organization of the seating area between the different restaurants.  The geometry of the canopy plays along with the wind to create a sensation of thermal comfort. Resembling to a sponge or layered membrane, the overlapping textiles funnel partially the wind through the seating area instead of blocking it altogether. The fabric is permeable and translucent, so it projects a gradient of shading while allowing to feel the sensation of being at the seaside.

The project received the first prize in a public competition organized by Candelaria City Hall. The design team completed until Phase 4 Tender and the project was put on hold due to the lack of funding.
